The campfire in the above photo was built in a typical patch of deer woods at 8:00 AM. By 10:00 AM, the direction the smoke was blowing had changed 18 times!

How many times have you heard that you should always place your tree stand down wind from where you expect to see deer? If you will stop and think about this, you'll probably realize that this is very poor advice. Here's why:

1. This advice assumes that the wind always blows in the same direction. If you have ever sat around a campfire and tried to stay out of the smoke, you know that wind direction can change every few minutes. What is a tree stand hunter supposed to do, move his stand every few minutes?

2. This advice also assumes that you always know where the deer will come from. That may be true in some situations, but any experienced hunter knows that deer often do the unexpected. They can come from any direction at any time and, the biggest bucks have a habit of coming in from your backside. Are you supposed to "write off" any deer that come behind your stand?

3. There is a much better method of handling the wind direction and scent problem. - HUNT HIGH!

Margaret and I use the Tree-Lounge method of hunting. Here are our recommendations on tree stand placement:

1. Hunt high enough that wind direction does not matter. (When hunting 10 to 20 feet high, scent is often a problem. It is rarely a problem when hunting 20 to 40 feet high.) Hunting high also makes it less likely that deer will see you. This is especially true after the leaves have fallen or when hunting deer that have learned to look for tree stands.

2. Place your stand where you will have the best view of your hunting area. (In most situations, hunting high will double or triple the amount of area one can cover when tree stand hunting.)

3. Try to place your stand so that the sun will be behind you. This will make it easier for you to see deer or other wildlife but will make it harder for them to see you. (If you plan to stay in your stand all day, try to place your stand facing North. This way the sun will come up on your right, will be behind you during the middle of the day, and will be to your left during the afternoon.
